McIntosh A BRIEF PROFILE Somalis are known to some as the long haired Abyssinian, the sister breed of the Somali. To get an overview of the origins of the Somali you can get more information from the Somali Breeders and Fanciers Association, Inc. This website gives you an extensive look at the beginnings of the Somali and the close relationship they have with the Abyssinian. The Somali Somalis are very alert, curious and intelligent cats. They are semi-longhaired, are a medium to large sized cat with a muscular body. They have silky coats that is non-matting and are fox-like in appearance having full breeches and a bushy tail. They have large almond shaped eyes, large ears and the ticked coat give the Somali their wild appearance. The Somali loves attention and are very affectionate, they will nuzzle you, love their pats and thrive on human companionship. They often have soft voices and some have a delightful trill. This cat loves to be with you, they will most likely try to help with your chores, making the beds, sweeping the floor, even supervise while you cook or prepare food. They are also very active even into adulthood and are known to have energy bursts where they will run through the house entertaining you with their antics. Heath Issues This breed can be subject to PK Deficiency which can cause anemia. All precautions have been taken at the Zabenka Cattery to ensure that kittens born will not be affected with PK Deficiency. Another disease is Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) which can affect Abyssinians and Somalis as well, this disease can cause blindness, again precautions have been taken to prevent kittens from being affected with this disease.
